Exhaust to manifold question

Ys - they do look the same size and they are the right shape, and the exhaust doesn't appear to be damaged. So - follow the procedure with the jack and tighten it all up! It's not the 'best' clamp by any means - in fact - it is the worst! You will also need the centre support you say is missing or there's not much hope of it lasting.........

them clamps are rubish(can i say that) i went throught two with the same problem of the exhaust coming apart and blowing, i then got the larger one with two bolts on either side and didnt do it in the two months it was on the car

Yes indeed the clamps or total pants.
I Think I have managed to sort it now thankyou to everyone for your help and to BMC who I know is never far away from a thread

mine was that bad as it was driving on the the ramp for its mot the exhaust fell off, (the guy let me off)

Did you manage with that clamp - or did you get hold of a better one ?
Now - look at that filter mounting - is the hole smaller than the inlet hole in the carb ??

Used the clamp I had, will have to procure a better one when I get the chance, with all the other bits and bobs that need attention I was not planning on the exhaust playing up but alas thanks to a botched job in the past.

I will check the carb/filter holes tomorrow if my hands permit (picked up lots of sratches and scrapes lol)
I'm guessing the holes should be the same size?

As long as the surfaces are clean before assembly, and there's plenty of paste applied, those clamps should hold for a while, even though they're not ideal. The only reason I use a 2 bolt type at the moment is I misplaced half the pressed metal type when messing with engines recently..

The clamp takes some of teh strain of the exhaust system, but there needs to be other mountings doing most of the work. Something the Midget has, which Minors seem not to, is a bracket from the bottom of the gearbox, that means the exhaust rocks with the engine, so reducing load on the flanges/ clamp. Then again, the Midget doesn't have the engine steady bar the Minor does, so I guess there's more movement to worry about.

Hi,
I was advised when fitting the exhaust downpipe to the manifold, to wind a piece of thick copper wire around the female opening of the downpipe just under the lip. This gives the clamp something to grip on and has always worked for me?

Use a clamp with 2 bolts I had a lot of trouble fitting my exhaust pipe with a single bolt clamp.
