sticking gearbox

The bearing was the right one, bushes appear to be OK and the pedal fully returns. I'll keep an eye on things and see what develops.

on the 1098 there are 2 different ones. one is ofset forwards, one is level with fork.

Well I was not aware of that Brixton, so I assume that as long as you buy a complete kit you get the right bearing with the right pressure plate and that both kits work OK as long as they are a complete matching set.
Why on earth were there 2 types, or is one the original Borg & Beck type and the other a pattern part ?
