Sounds very much like the back axle casing has rotated and/or moved sideways.

Sorry the front hanger plates, and in answer to a previous correspondant it is a Morris Minor 1963 sky blue and still has the original plastic cover on the back seats, and the "american" syle indicators

Now this will annoy you the most pleasant drive i've had is when i had a 2cv except my girlfirend thought it was too camp!

I've read all these replies and I think it sounds like the mounting plates on the axle have rusted away letting the axle rotate and now the diff is not level but pointing up, raising the prop nearer the tunnel . I had to remake the mountings on our traveller because of this. Especially as he says the bump stop is at the wrong angle.

Sorry guys , gals - laid it up for now but weather is crap - I did replace the gearbox a year ago and didn't pay too much attention to the engine bracket thing and the gearbox cable - now it isn't just as simple as "lets tighten these up as much as possible" - so can anyone give me the refined proper way of doing it? I've got the new parts - then , and only then start on the back susp

The engine bracket should be done up to allow the rubbers to do their job properly and not done up rock solid, the gearbox steady cable should just be done up enough to put a slight tension on it if overdone you can get some strange noises while driving.

Kevin your not refering to that earth strap looking thingy are you ?

Well I wouldn't call it an earth strap as they are usually flat and these are of a curcular construction with a threaded section at either end and its main purpose is to stop the gearbox moving under heavy braking and causing the fan to give the radiator a quick kiss
