HIF 44 and fittings

My marina engined car (marina manifold) with the marina elbow on a hif 44 used the marina elbow and the minor airbox, but I have now gone for a mini elbow and airbox because I was mucking around with carbs...

Following up my previous post I just remembered that the main reason why I struggled with the carb and intake set up was that the engine has a particularly long and unusually upward sloping alloy inlet manifold. If you have a Minispares/MG Metro or comparable unit you might get away with it.

Hi Russ either the mini or MG metro airbox will also fit the HIF 44 the better one would be from an MG metro as you can get a K & N filter to fit the airbox, but you may be able to get one to fit the mini airbox, if you look at the picture of the engine bay in Dave's car from over the pond you wil see the mini type fitted, I also think that the 1300 Maestro one also fits, and the chances of turning up a Princess one I would have thought would be difficult nowadays.

Hello again and a happy New Year to all.

See images below I have finally assembled the lot today and this is what I want to use but will the bonnet shut. I have no engine in the pick-up so kinda not easy to judge

Any info welcome

The air flow into the big carb will be badly strangled by the small diameter intake tube on that filter! You could cut more air holes around the sides of the casing - this is a common mod on Minis and seems to work for them.

There is only one way to find out.

Will the air cleaner not bolt direct onto the carb. My Princess one does.

Edit. Sorry didn't see the bit about no engine. Cant you try it on someone elses. Shouldn't be too big a job.

OK that's the intake trumpet I described earlier that casued contact with the bonnet. So my arrangement had a intake manifold that was longer and higher and a airbox that is a little smaller so it's going to be a close call.

Using the elbow and airbox from the MG Metro definitely allows the bonnet to shut. Airflow no problem up to 100bhp with a K&N filter element fitted. Removing the whole airbox on a rolling road session a few weeks ago gave 8 more bhp, 104 to 112, with no other changes other than a tweak to the mixture!

The only mod is to remove the gubbins at the front of the airbox and shorten it so that it will clear the radiator. Hacksaw and Araldite job!

Russ, Just been out and taken some photos.

Obviously this one from front. If you look closely you will see the 3/4" ally plate for LPG.

Taken from top showing closeness to wiper motor bracket.

Close up of ally plate. Obviously as you dont need LPG mixer platr you would have 3/4" more clearance.

Thats almost the setup I had Russ, except mine had the stanard minor filter on the elbow and it cleared the bonnet

Sadly Matt the standard Minor elbow will not fit fit the HIF 44 carb it may well fit the HIF 38 though
