A fire extinguisher is a good idea regardless of whether you think ammeter wiring is less safe than the various other unfused circuits that run through the bulkhead into the car.

If anyone is after an Ammeter then I have one I no longer need. I've just changed to an alternator after having to start on the handle for 3 weeks! I'd consider a swop for a temp gauge ;)
