The association of precision angle grinders will be upset by recent remarks! Some of them have spend years perfecting their art. The pass out test involves fashioning a 1 inch cube to within 1 thou + or- and perfectly flat, using no more than a standard disc..
Must say ultra fine cutting discs or dics can be used with great precision in the right hands. You could use one just to cut 1/2 way through the steel and finish cut with a good ol' wood chisel or proper ones as per John's pics.

Mr Flatbum - who started all this - could I suppose just flood the section between decks with Waxoyl - should be ok for a few years anyway! The 'new' floor underneath would be best painted with zinc under coat followed by chassis black.
