Just a question now of whether to keep looking for an A+ or to settle for a standard 1275 A unit
The suitability of an engine is more down to it's condition that whether it is A or A+. Either has the potential to produce more power if is in good nick and you bolt on the right goodies.
The great god Vizard has calculated that a good manifold is worth 6 to 8 bhp alone. This and the larger carb is where the A+ gets the extra power from.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

vincenth wrote:My original plan was to get a 1275, give it an overhaul, add HIF44 carb and water cooled manifold. I'm not after a vast increase in power, just enough to keep up with modern traffic and help with the hills in Derbyshire.
To conclude, the general concensus is that the additional power provided by the ital A+ comes from the gumph bolted on it (head, carb, manifold etc...) or used within it (cam, pistons etc..).

So if you are looking for a block to overhaul and put all of these pieces together yourself then it doesn't matter if its the A or A+: as Peetee said, its more down to the condition of the unit.

But, if you are looking to source an engine with all the bits bolted on already then as Kevin said, you'll get more from the A+ because the bits and pieces it comes with provide better output.

I hope this sums things up accurately :D

Exactly - it's all down to carb and manifolds - can be fitted to any 1275 unit. Obviously wise to avoid a low compression unit if you can. You're lucky if you have a choice - thin on the ground up here, although eminor seems to have unearthed a few!
