Alternator

Post by Willie »

This gets even more confusing, I have checked my 1957 car and the wire
colours are different to the later models but basically: The original THICK
connector on your Dynamo should push on to the '+' contact on the Alternator. The other end of this wire should be found on the 'D' terminal on
the control box. you remove this THICK wire and connect it to the BROWN
wires on terminal 'A'. The THIN wire from terminal 'D' is removed and so is
the wire on terminal 'F'. These are then connected to each other and taped up
The original THIN connector on your Dynamo should just push on to the 'IND'
terminal on your Alternator. In other words you have used the original two
dynamo leads to connect to your new alternator. The recommendation for
the alternator is that you run two wires to the Batttery terminal which is why
your supplied harness has two Browns. I believe this was because early
alternators would burn out if the '+' lead became disconnected, Later types
don't do this so the double brown isn't so vital.

Here is the wiring loom:

http://shop.morrisminorspares.co.uk/pop ... p?pID=1350

There are only 2 connections to make. The thick and thin brown wires are joined together and connect to the battery side of the solenoid.
The other one goes to the original small dynamo spade. The big dynamo spade is disconnected altogether.

I e-mailed ESM today, but got no reply (bank holiday).
I'm confused too. :-? :-? :-?

OK, it becomes clear! Your wiring colours are for the later models.
Your original dynamo connectors are indeed redundant. The new looms Brown leads go as shown to the Battery via the solonoid terminal. The two wires on Control Box terminal'D' are removed but the THIN one of these two
is connected to your new loom. The THICK wire is dead. The lead from terminal 'F' is removed too. If you switch on and get the ignition light but it
does not extinguish when the engine starts then I would suspect the alternator (good start)! I am sorry to have confused you but the wiring lay-
out I gave earlier was for using the original wiring without a new loom.

Interesting.......

I've left the THIN wire on terminal D. I've connected the original dynamo small spade into my loom........NOT the thin terminal D wire!
I thought the diagram was a little ambiguous.......I shall connect as per your suggestion.
Wish me luck! :) :) :)

That's it then, the THIN Brown/yellow wire from terminal 'D' should now be
connected to the Brown/Yellow on the new loom.
