I don't understand that the components are not wide enough to bear on the filter itself, this concave washer is the widest part and it still doesn't bridge the gap[frame][/frame]

I gently prised off the old rubber seal and replaced it with the new one supplied with the filter element,gently pushed up inside the filter housing. After it bolted up I refilled the engine with oil and ran it (while still up on the axle stands) to look for leaks with my inspection lamp, no leaks so far.

Try this David - this is from the Haynes MG Midget manual but the same type of filter assembly was used on the Minor. This shows the right order for all the parts - good luck [frame][/frame]

I presume the pressure of the oil bears down on the spring and cup washer. Anyway a test drive with my friend Jenny showed no oil loss and the engine ran very smoothly.[frame][/frame]

Does your filter have the pressure plate? I couldn't see it in the photo. This has a domed section which presses the filter cartridge up into the housing head. Item 7 on the diagram. If it's missing then this would probably explain why your filter leaks.

Thanks Bruce, that pressure plate part 7 is missing on mine. seems to work ok without it, but I'll monitor the situation over the next few days. Bit of a Babe magnet my Morris. [frame][/frame]

Hi David, I am not an expert on Morris engines, but my limited understanding was that the Pressure Plate (Nº:7) is used to push the filter up against the Oil Filter Head using the spring, so that the oil would pass through the filter i.e. from inlet port through the filter to outlet port. If you have not got a Pressure Plate, is the filter just sitting in the bottom of the bowl, allowing the oil to enter and leave without passing through the filter?

Can those with more knowledge please comment on my understanding given above?

It definitely needs the concave plate, makes no sense to leave it out! If you do you might as well leave the spring etc out, as these are not doing anything without the plate. It may not leak without but that's not the point!

Sorry David, the guys above are right - without the plate, the oil is not being forced through the filter so this leaves the possibility that contamination, in the form of bits of metal and crud from the engine that are allowed to circulate and create wear problems elsewhere in the engine. It may not leak but without the plate it isn't filtering the oil either!

I'm sure you can pick up a plate from somebody local or again through ESM or other suppliers. Would be a shame to risk the engine for the lack of the right part

first thing i ever learned on this message-board -- BMCecosse told me to be careful not to disguard the pressure plate with the filter when changing the oil filter

ok then, time for a compromise for the time being, until I can fit part number 7 that is, I found this rubber sander backing that resembles the missing part, after marking it using the old oil filter element, I used my tin snips to cut it to the same circumference as the element.[frame][/frame]

it's not quite the same, but small enough to slide up and down inside the filter bowl, the bolt hole was too narrow so I had to ream that so it would slide up the long bolt.[frame][/frame]
