It would be nice if we could get all the Minors together at the show.
Had a word with the neighbour who is in the vintage club earlier well he with I actually as one of the dogs absconded and went to visit him :P
He told me who the secretary of the vintage club is turns out I know the chap - will go see him & mention it to him either tomorrow or monday when i pop into the town.
I'm sure they would be delighted to see you at the show - will have a word and let you know.

As its a busy time you would be well advised to book your ferry places. The the Hope /Gills bay http://www.pentlandferries.co.uk/ one will take a verbal telephone booking and wont charge you for a change or cancellation - and as its a small boat compared to the scrabster - stromness one http://www.northlinkferries.co.uk/ it really would be daft not to book your vehicle on well in advance.

I know the owner of a very nice farmhouse B&B http://www.orkney.info/ramsquoy/ as well as the owner of a small pub/hotel http://www.smithfieldhotel.co.uk/ if anyone is looking for accommodation - both nothing fancy but very welcoming and more importantly the best value around these parts.

Hi Kevin,
Many many thanks for the offer of camp space :D
I'll be in touch shortly to see what's what... and yes booking ferries would be the best idea - I didn't do that yet but the pentland one was on my list of things I need to sort out.

I have now booked the ferry for myself, Lesley, Victoria and Onne, so if those that are definitely joining us will send me a PM, I will send them details.

Better be quick :D

I've booked the Pentland ferry, sailing out to Orkney on Saturday evening and coming back on Monday morning. It cost £80 return for me and Fenchurch, but they said I don't have to pay until I travel. We need to be there 30 minutes before departure.

Now to get Fenchurch on the road again. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel at least... Paintwork and woodwork ought to be finished this week, then I've just got to bolt the panels back on.

Just another little reminder to those that are coming, if nothing else please make sure you book your ferry and Orkney accomodation asap, the Run will be on us sooner than you think

Quick pointer Alex - The County Show is actually on Saturday 11th during the day - so if you were planning to take part or even visit and have a gander at the vintage stuff that will be there in droves you might want to try for a day earlier?

Is the County Show a different thing to the Vintage Rally?

According to the agenda we won't reach JOG until Saturday:

Thursday 9th August - Start from Lands End - travel to approx; Stafford (302 miles).
Friday 10th August - Travel to approx Dunblane (303 miles).
Saturday 11th August - Travel to John O'Groats (230 miles) Catch ferry to Orkney.
Sunday 12th August - Visit Rally.

No your OK Alex - brain not kicked in properly today -
The vintage Rally is Sunday 12th the day after the county show - my confusion was that they will also be doing stuff at the show itself - line up the cars and engines etc - so was thinking of that rather than the rally the following day :o
You can enter the vintage show as late as 31st July but this being Orkney it wouldnt really matter if you just turned up on the day.

This does seem to be true, but it doesn't apply to ferries and accomodation, and unfortunately I haven't yet had confirmation from everyone that they have booked these.

Yes, I know, I'm a worrier

I'm tempted by this.
I assume no problem me joining group at M6 in my area (Stoke-on-Trent).?
I'd be camping - by myself (I snore badly due to too many broken noses :D )
I need to do a little more costing but I haven't had a holiday for years and this sound fun.
Another problem is MOT is due now and I know rear spring hangers need repair but until I check I don't know if any other aspects require attention.
One thing I'd be fitting is the new cruise control unit that has been sitting unused in the shed for years - no point in having aching leg !

How are people planning on communicating ?
I've a CB but also have a pair of the cheap PWR radios (that will take a hands free type kit as voice activated).
I've used them in the past for journeys with two cars and they work great over short distances - maybe 1-2 miles on motorway but less in built up areas.

What would be the planned cruise speed ?

I'll probably be camping too, mainly due to cost. Need to go rooting through the loft for my tent and sleeping bag soon...

Apart from SF cons, my last proper holiday was when I drove around Iceland in 2003 staying in youth hostels every night.

I bet your car doesn't need as much work as Fenchurch... I'm actually trying hard to get her on the road before the 20th of July because I'm going to a con that weekend and need to take way more stuff than I could carry on the train.

I used to be a radio amateur but I sold my rig and let the license lapse years ago. Apparently they've since stopped charging the annual fee...

Visual signals and mobile phones (hands-free obviously)?

(Lots of swear words)
Yet again something that I hadn't taken into account and is outside my control is going to ruin plans so I'm not going to be able to go on the run after all.

I'm gutted.

We have a lot of animals so my wife & I have had seperate holidays (we also have completley different tastes and I'd hate to go to some of the hot places she normally visits) for 17 years.
This year she's taking our youngest, with one of her friends & children, to Holland.
Originally it was last week of school but seems they have managed to now change it to the same time as the run :(
Back to alternative plan - the eldest (23) and myself will take the Moggie over to Ireland for a week instead later in the year.
