Breather Pipes ...

I've just been looking at pictures of Mirium .. She had a breather pipe that went from the engine breather to the side of the carb .. (she was a 69)

Pod .. has the same arrangement BUT with a different inlet manifold that has a threaded bit that's blocked off ..

The spares car has an arrangement where there is no breather to the carb but that it goes to the inlet Manifold Via a "Wierd bit" sticking out the manifold where pod has a bit of nothing ..

Pod and mirium are/were 69's and spares car is a 68 ..

I suspect that the spares car is correct and that Pod has had a different Carb and that mirium had an engine older than she was ..

Can anyone confirm/deny this ?

Ehhh ? Just make sure the rocker cover breather is connected to the inlet system somehow! This stops you breathing carcinogenic fumes. The plug on the inlet manifold will be for a servo - don't use that. The fitting on the side of the carb is ideal - because it's upstream of the throttle plate - and it doesn't cover the sir filter with gunge.

If the 'wierd' arrangement on the inlet manifold is roughly mushroom shaped
with the top held on by a spring clip then it is a genuine fitting used briefly
on the Minor. It was quickly replaced by the system where the breather pipe
goes straight from the crankcase to the carb. The mushroom type works but
depends on a diaphragm inside which can give nasty symptoms if it fractures.
CHICKENJOHN was able to buy new diaphragms recently and you would be
advised to get a couple of spare ones in if you intend to use this arrangement.

But I thought that putting the oily engine fumes back into carb would reduce, the already low, octane. With a reduction in performance.

Well if it's a choice between cancer and a slight drop in performance !!!! The fumes also give me a headache and a sore throat (on long hauls). Think of it as free 'upper cylinder lubricant' ! It works.

Ah yes, but.

If the crankcase pressure is kept low by sucking from the carb then you won't get oil pushed up past the rings into the cylinder which is more likely to reduce the octane than any fumes from the breather. Apparently. Well, that's what I remember Mr Vizard saying anyway.
