1098 gearbox to 948 engine
Could you please tell me if the 1098 gearbox is a straight swop into a 1954 split screen 948 engined moggy Thanks John

Very nearly a straight swap (most comments based on the 948 engine having a 948 clutch fitted on it, but this may not be the case
The 948 engine has a different clutch to the 1098 and subsequently the 948 gearbox has a different thrust bearing (on the release arm bolted through the bellhousing).
You'll need to check whitch combination of thrust bearing is required for whichever clutch you'll be using with the 1098 gearbox (I presume it needs the 948 thrust bearing when keeping a 948 clutch...)
Most likely is that the release arm (and thrust bearing) is left with the gearbox so the 1098 box probably has the 1098 thrust bearing on it at the moment.
Things get even more complicated if you have a SII gearbox currently running on the 948cc engine! Who knows what parts will be there in this case!
The last thing you want to do is fit it all and only find out about the clutch release problems whaen you start driving!! Therefore best to make sure it all works together before wasting a lot of time.

Jan 07: back from a month thru North Africa (via Timbuktu) in a S3 Landy
June 07 - back from Zwickau Trabi Treffen
Aug 07 & Aug 08 - back from the Lands End to Orkney in 71 pickup
Sept 2010 - finally gave up breaking down in a SII Landy...
where to break down next?
2013... managed to seize my 1275 just by driving it round the block

You can onne, but its a job involving a large lathe, that is able to hold the split screen gearbox rear gear stick casing. A Colchester 2000 lathe with 4 jaw chuck can do it, ive done it before. the split screen casing needs to be machined to accomadate the larger rear bearing of the 1098 gearbox.
