Hi all you electrical boffins, is there someone out there who can tell me how to wire a smiths amps gauge to "mungo a '56 splitscren. I have no knowlerdge whatsoever about car electrics so a detailed description would be absolutely wonderful. On the back of the gauge are two spade connectors and a green & white wire that comes from the base of the right hand spade connector, it's held on by a nut and it looks as if is is isolated from the spade connector. Mungo has a dynamo and not a alternator so exactly where, how should the gauge be wired and what to. I would be one happy bunny if someone could sort it for me.

The negative left hand terminal of your battery should have a long very thick black insulated wire which goes to one end of the starter switch. Also connected to this end of the starter switch is a brown wire of 'normal' thickness which goes to terminal 'A' on the voltage regulator. The voltage regulator is the black box on the left and terminal 'A' is second from the left.
You need to replace this brown wire with a circuit containing the ammeter.
Firstly disconnect this brown wire going from starter switch to voltage regulator at both ends. Then make up two leads using wire that is at least as thick as the brown wire that you have disconnected. Use one lead to connect one terminal of the ammeter to the starter switch where you removed one end of the brown wire. Use the other lead to connect the other end of the ammeter to the 'A' terminal of the voltage regulator where you removed the other end of the brown wire.
If the ammeter is connected correctly it will point to the right when the battery is being charged up. If not swop the leads over at the ammeter.

Be careful though how you route the cable through the bulkhead to the meter as it's an unfused live and if the insulation 'chaffs' and shorts on the body it will melt and might well cause an electrical fire.
If you are not good with electrics, then get someone to do it for you or at least check that it's safe after you have done it.
