propeller shaft

Post by markattard »

Just removed both universal joints and forgot to mark the shaft which way goes to where.

Is the shaft symmetrical and if not are there any marks to indicate the correct reassembly?

Think it is symmetrical - but it would have been better marked ! You'll just have to try it now and see if it's ok. Good luck.

Take it from me, you can get the yoke 180 degrees out and it'll be obviously out of balance and you'll end up taking it to bits and doing it again. Yep, been there and done that!

AFAIK, the only thing to do is try it and see if it vibrates :( I believe you can get props re-balanced, but that's outside my experience.

I wonder why it should make a difference, I mean once it's pefectly balanced and rotates it should behave the same in both clockwise and anti clockwise motion......

Didn't realise you were confused about which end was which - I've never heard of that one before. I can have a look and see if the little welded on weights are consistentlly at a particular end, but that'll have to wait till it's light :D

The common conception is that they are balanced together with the ends therefore any change of assembly position of any parts can create a problem. Never done it myself so I'd only be guessing.

prop

Post by Willie »

I had my other Minors' prop balanced some years ago, the WHOLE assembly
was needed.

I used to work with props (changed 1,000`s of UJ`s) and it can certainly not harm to put the parts back in the same order.

The main thing to do is get your grease nipples the correct way round so they go in the cut outs in the yokes. I always used to put the grease nipples so that part of the cross was in compression when the prop was spinning.

From experience generally the tolerances of prop part manufacture was closer than the repeatability we could balance to. In otherwords it did not make a difference how the parts were reassembles.

Do ensure your diff flange and prop flange are very clean and free from burrs so they mate correctly.
