Cough, cough

Post by iddy »

When my has been on a run of a couple of miles it coughs twice before stopping, when I switch off.
I've been told lean running is the cause, and to adjust the carb via the nut underneath. Is this right?

BTW, I'm off to Bristol show tomorrow. I'm told it's pretty good.
First things first, but not necessarily in that order.

coughs

Post by Willie »

If by 'cough' you mean that the engine tries to keep going when you switch
off then this is called 'running on'. The first step is to make sure the tick-over
speed is not too fast. If so then turn the revs down. As to adjusting the mixture nut we need to know what the tickover is like when the engine is at
normal running temperature. Is it even, or lumpy. does slightly pulling out
the choke on tickover cause the engine to stall?

Maybe just needing a good blast up the motorway to clear it out. You could try the old 'Redex' treatment. It's caused by some carbon in the chamber glowing red - and keeping the ignition going after you have switched off. Maybe a new set of plugs would help - could also be ignition timing too retarded and the engine running a wee bit hot.

Thanks Guys,
Plugs, points, condenser, cap, leads, coil etc. etc. are all newish - 6 weeks or so, about 250 miles.
At tickover it's steady, not lumpy, and not too fast. Seems just right to my amateur ears. I'll try puling the choke out as suggested next time i drive it. I'll also borrow a timing lamp.
First things first, but not necessarily in that order.

Don't pull the choke out - that will only make it worse! Just advance the timing a bit until it 'pinks' - then back off again slightly. You could also try using a different brand of petrol - sometimes seems to make a difference.
