bottom end gasket set - rubber instead of cork question

Hi peoples, my bottom end gasket set has arrived and I notice that I have the rubber seals instead of the cork ones - I hope you know which 2 bits I'm going on about. My question is that the ital manual (its a 1275 A+) says I need to apply non setting jointing compound to the cork seals. Do I need to do this if the seals are rubber?

Where did you order it from? I recall that Pyoor_Kate found the rubber version really hard to get hold of.

boy last time I checked

Its from the Birmingham parts centre - the packet looks a bit 'dusty' to say the least!

Anyone know if I use the non setting compound on them though?

Yes, use the compound. I do all the time, but as BMC says: don't put too much on.

i have just got 3 sets with rubber seals, so if any one might want a set i may be persuaded to part with one.
these are original com[plete gasket conversion sets

they are all for 1275 itals or marinas.
maybe the 1098 are the same, also will photo those pilot light thingys and try and send a photo

Hello Cam, when you say you use it all the time, do you mean on ALL gaskets including the cylinder head? Or all the bottom end gaskets or... just a little confused.

By the way, I'll post some piccies but the job that I was hoping to have finished yesterday isn't and my car engine is in pieces in a barn 100 miles from me

The idea was to remove engine, fit performance cam and stage 3 head and re-build. Everything was going to plan until I realised that the new duplex chain would foul 2 bolts and at 5pm on saturday there was no way I could find replacement counter sunk screws. I had to abandon for the weekend

I'm hoping to get it back together on Thursday now.

Shame because I've never taken an engine out before and everything was going so smoothly - I was even starting to enjoy it

Kirstmin, I use the gasket compound on virtually all the paper gaskets except the head gasket (which isn't paper anyway) and the rear axle bearing paper gaskets.

My comments above though were just referring to the sump when I wrote them.

OK, thanks for your info. Having cleaned off the old gaskets that's what I thought but wasn't 100% sure. Do you use the same jointing compound on all of them. eg: hylomer blue?
