Absolutely - it's just a bodge way of getting the head on there - and saves butchering the block. I de-shrouded the valves by grinding away inside the chamber around the valves - which was fine as otherwise the CR was going to be way too high anyway. And I used the slightly shorter Cooper S exhaust valves to keep the rockers more or less horizontal - although I don't really think this was necessary - I just happened to have the valves lying around. The head seats were in a poor way anyway - and the head only cost me £5 !! But yes - a much better job is done with pockets - i have done several emgines that way - including my 998 Mini autocross car some 40 years ago, which had an S head and a 544 cam !

Blimey you were rich in those days! The oldest Mini was only 6 years old 40 years ago and the 1071 'S' was 4 years old and the 998 cooper had only been out 12 months! :o

Bet the parts weren't cheap!

The autocross car was indeeca very early shell - rescued from a write-off and repaired very cheaply. Engine and box cam out a Wolseley also in scrap yard - it was a 998 (one of the first) , but not Cooper unit, and the scrappie didn't know that it wasn't an 850 - so we got it very cheaply - it was on a magic wand box! We scrounged and scrimped where we could - the car was 'shared' by 3 of us (all poor students) although I was the main force behind it and eventually bought the other 2 out. I towed it around on a home-made trailer behind my Morris 1000 (which was really my Mother's car - but she didn't like driving !!) which also doubled as my Rally car - and daily transport into Uni.
