Hi I recently bought a spare engine to strip down and rebuild but on the aluminium tag it has the numbers and letters as follows and no idea what it means and what size engine it is as the owner said it’s from a 1967 Austin pickup what was scrapped and saved this engine
On the plate it says
Ag 167 er80768
AD
Can someone please tell me what size engine it is I can’t see the 950 stamped on the block
The oil filter housing is not horizontal like the 803
So am I right to assmume it’s a 1098cc?

Re: Engine number on alliminium tag
If the prefix is 8G, 8 may look like an A, it may be a 848cc A Series used on the Austin Van many of them were GPO. What casting number is on the cylinder head? The 848 was also used on the Mini.

8G was the prefix for ALL A Series Gold Seal Factory Reconditioned full engines, you can find this info on several websites, including this one
https://mgaguru.com/mgtech/engine/be100a.htm
My own car's engine is an 8G, someone fitted it thinking it was a 948 some 25 years ago, only when I brought it did I discover, from checking Block & head numbers, that it was a 1098.
At the bottom of the link I've provided, you'll also find the explanation of the 'AD', which my Gold Seal engine also has.
You might find some gold paint on it somewhere.
Other websites will give further info, such as this one: https://www.mginfo.co.uk/upgrades4mgs/f ... umbers.pdf
I tend to find Mini Sites not very helpful, as they concentrate on the Mini without the broader details.
