New wing verses old wing

Post by Richie B »

Front wing issues.
I’ve recently got back into my garage to continue restoration of my 62 door saloon.
Various other projects then last couple of years getting to grips with advanced prostrate cancer.
Anyway I bought new wings from ESM back in 2018/19 and now fitted them. The original drivers side front had been replaced approx 20 years ago.
The new left hand front wing appears slightly different at the point where the front angled area between headlamp opening and top left hand corner of front grill seems longer and more angled than the drivers side.
I’ve included a couple of photos.
I think the way forward is some fettling of the wing adjacent to the headlight opening so I can get everything to line up.
I’m interested in the views of the wise folk on here.
Many thanks Richard

Both those wings are cheap imported "pattern" wings. You can tell from the way the steel is formed around the headlamp and the join that you mention. I bought a pair once for one of our Minors. The steel was quite thin and the fit and finish was rather poor. However, they were quite a bit less expensive than the British made "Heritage" wings so they seemed a reasonable alternative at the time. You can pay your money and take your choice.
Personally I wouldn't purchase them again. I have replaced the front wings on our other Minor more recently and opted for the Heritage wings. More expensive but a better fit, better finish along with thicker, better quality steel, so hopefully they will last longer.

The Heritage wings were not a perfect fit either but they were better than the cheaper ones which required quite a bit of work in order to achieve good alignment - just as you have found.
