Brake shoe adjusters

Post by KevinB »

I have been told my adjusters are worn. Do they typically do that?
Thanks.

After a long time, yes they do. I expect you can get new ones from ESM. I was able to weld a new ridge on mine at work many years ago.

Yes, they last a long time, but can eventually wear. I had to replace some on my car.

The adjusters have a mask and the actual adjuster. The adjuster has a spindle that fits in the mask. Usually the slots in the mask wear because it is only thin metal. Eventually the adjuster itself can also wear and it is the teeth that wear. This manifests as the adjuster slipping. You can buy the adjusters complete from ESM but note that the 7" adjusters and 8" adjusters are not interchangeable. Early cars had 7" brakes all round, later cars have 8" front and 7" rear. ESM don't sell the mask on it's own if that is all you need but they do turn up second hand. These adjusters were getting very scarce and hard to find but ESM came to the rescue by making them again.

Thank you all, especially Stephen for the valuable detail.

The car is at the workshop for the brakes and also
unfortunately, three patches of chassis welding.
