Unleaded engine

I bought my 1962 2 door saloon 9 years ago to carry out full restoration. Over a period of 4 years I’ve replaced a lot of panels.
I managed get car off rotisserie and hand to stop work for various projects then started treatment for advanced prostrate cancer.
I’m slowly getting back into garage. My question is how do I find out if the engine is upgraded for unleaded fuel.

The simple answer is you cannot tell without taking the engine apart or finding records of previous work done to the cylinder head. If you really must investigate you would have to take the cylinder head off, remove the valves and look to see if hardened valve seats have been fitted.

Unless you are planning on doing high mileage on fast roads then you will be fine with a non-converted engine. Just use it normally and if you (eventually) get signs of valve recession, have the cylinder head converted. Or....exchange the head for an unleaded head (expensive).

I agree that it should be OK regardless with light usage. Alternatively, you can always use an additive approved by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs - avoid any that are not approved. Using an additive will not cause a problem if the engine has been converted, and wiull be a benefit if it hasn't.
