MM / Series 2 speedo

Hi,
I recently posted a wanted ad regarding this but, while I have it to hand, I thought I'd ask about this hole, as it doesn't appear in the side of every one of these I've seen:

Is it simply an access hole for adjustments or is it for something else?

Possibly but I thought the (once) clear plastic slots were for this purpose.
One other thing to note here is that this is the MM type speedo, not the early Series 2 type, as discussed in another post. So it may be something specific to the MM (sidevalve) cars.
I think we need a picture of one in situ on an MM.

I agree the lighting is via the large plastic windows.
That hole is most likely something to do with the manufacturering/assembly/calibration process.

Isn’t it positioned to hold a bulb next to the now yellowed, cloudy window? What other lights are present?

The instrument illumination on an MM or Series 2 looks like this behind the covering lid:
