I now have to admit to eating some humble pie - I followed your suggestions and checked for wiring continuity and 12v connection - all checked out. I also checked that the alternator was earthed properly - but still no working light. Finally I thought I should check the bulb....It had blown! I put in a new bulb and now all works as it should.
Moral - check the obvious first!
