PCV Valve

Has anyone dismantled one of these components, although the pin is free, it looks a bit rusty, I’d rather get to the pin and clean properly, the centre looks to be held with a circular clip, however I have not, as yet, been able to remove it.

At the bottom of the inside of the body of the unit there is a poppet valve that has a light spring underneath it. This can become gummed up with old oil but can be cleaned out with carburettor cleaner. That little valve should open very easily with light pressure from a screwdriver. There is no disassembly possible to access that valve or spring as far as I'm aware. The parts look to have been press fitted together with no clip I can see.

The picture is of a dirty old valve body. I cleaned up the one on my car by squirting in lots of caburettor cleaner and opening and closing the valve with a small screwdriver. Then I squirted carburettor cleaner in from the other side, put my finger over the end of the tube and gave it a good shake.

Thanks Stephen, the central valve pin is free to move, assisted by the fine spring but looking at it there is rust present, which I want to attend to. The centre piece has a circlip of sorts holding it in, you can just about make it out. It should be removable as that’s how the spring and pin must have been inserted.

Ok, do let us know! I will examine under magnification. I cannot see a clip and I think they are a press interference fit.

I will ! I’m determined to remove the assembly, if you look at your picture, there are two diameters the inner is the clip. It’s steel, in the aluminium body. Of course it might wreck the valve

OK good luck. I had a look under magnification. I think the inner part is a zinc casting that has been interference fitted into the alloy body and then the alloy edge rolled over. It may look like a clip but I don't think it is......

I’m beginning to doubt my initials thought about there being a circlip, you may be right Stephen, re interference fit. Looks like I might need to destroy it to verify which it is.

So there IS a circlip for the bottom section it appears?

Seems so, the one on mine is not particularly identifiable as it’s rather eaten away, making removal difficult to grasp.

Yes. I do have a spare valve but I don't want to wreck it. I might tentatively explore whether I can find the clip.
