My '66 Traveller has developed a real judder in reverse, and has gone on to doing it in first now. A real "whump-whump-whump" of a judder, only avoided by letting the clutch out in first 'a-bit-quick-like'. Has my clutch gone or does something need adjusting? I know this is a numpty question but I only got the car a couple of months ago from a well known dealer!
What do you think? A bit of advice gladly received.
You should check that the engine steady bar(on the top rear of the
cylinder head) is still in one piece as they have a habit of breaking
off at the battery box end. Also check that the prop shaft universal
joints are in good condition.
Otherwise, if you've done a lot of miles you may find you've got oil on the clutch plate. This is a problem that I had and lead to a hideous judder in reverse and a moderate one on engaging first (on occasion) - it's a bit difficult to tell how bad it is, but you can have a nose at the split pin hanging out of the bottom of the gearbox bell housing; if it's dripping with oil; then it might be worth whipping it off and having a good old clean.
Of course, that won't stop it happening again :-/

Well - top steady and dodgy clutch seem to cover all the possibilities. The split pin in the bell housing will normally have oil on it - it's not easy to tell the difference between normal and a flood unless it keeps dripping.
However, if you are really struggling with the technical side 'asking the dealer' is always an option!
