URGENT - Recent ESM Marina disc brake conversion, will swap (or buy) for front drum brake set-up !?

Post by Calva »

I have an address in Southampton, Hampshire and live in Normandie, France.
I have a 1964 Morris Minor 1000 (1098cc - reg: CAP 460B), which has a disc brake conversion supplied by ESM.
I entered France with car and was fined 300 Euros for being a French resident (UK citizen) importing a British registered vehicle. I either have to register it here in France or return it to the UK within 30 days (theoretically).
To register it here, as a Collector’s Vehicle, it must not have any major modifications, such as the brake system being changed !!! So I need all the components to reluctantly convert it back to original front 8” drum brakes.
I realise that I might need to buy new shoes, drums, wheel cylinders, etc., to pass the French MoT equivalent, but currently have none of the necessary parts.
Any help would be appreciated.
In fact if anybody wants to visit Calvados (45 minutes from Ouistreham – Portsmouth-Caen ferry) with their drum brake Moggy, they can help with the swap and have free accommodation !

I am sorry that I cannot help with the return to the original drum brake set up but why cannot you just register it as a non collectors vehicle to get over any initial hurdle(s) and go from there?

Thanks for your suggestion, but to register as a 'normal' car will involve an official inspection (fee), as it is too old for European Certificate of Conformity, followed by a Contrôle Technique (French MoT) (fee). The Douane (Customs) will assess it's value, and calculate import duty, plus.20,% VaT. Then, the registration fee, followed by retests every 2 years.
A Collector's registration reduces costs. Only Mot, 60 Euros for Collector's certificate, and 5% VaT for importation.
Needless to say, my calculations and options are under daily review, but time is also important.
Looks likely I'll offer for sale in the UK.....

You can buy at least some of the parts new or second hand from ESM.

I believe the swivel pin leg has the holes for the brake backplate drilled out larger when converted to disc brakes. This shouldn't be a problem when converting back to drums but you will have to use larger diameter bolts than original and drill out the brake backplates as well.

You will also need to put back the top-hat washer in the brake master cylinder

Parts you will need:

1) Brake backplates LH and RH 8" (these are handed)
2) Brake cylinders x4‎ (these are handed). Pattern ones are rubbish IMHO. Buy the Lockheed ones even though they're more expensive.
3) Adjusters x4 (must be for 8" brakes)
4) Set of 8" brake shoes. Branded type are much better.
5) Pull off springs x4
6) Brake drums x2. The high quality ones from ESM are better.
7) Bleed nipples x2
9) Screw backplate to cylinder small x4
10) Screw backplate to cylinder large x4
11) Bleed nipple dust covers x2
12) Flexible hose x2
13) Top hat washer for master cylinder
14) Hubs, bearings, spacer pieces, oil seals, wheel studs. The Timken bearings from ESM are better than the cheaper ones.

Try Ebay for the brake backplates. For instance: https://www.morrisminorspares.com/brake ... r-p1238524

OR you could be a bit crafty and find a set of 9" Wolseley 1500 brakes. This wouldn't be such a downgrade and since all the parts are MOWOG it's unlikely anybody would notice.......

I happen to have all the major parts in Stephen's list, they were left over from a disk brake swap a while ago I kept the parts.
If you are interested send me a PM.
