I have recently removed a oil pump (which is the same oil pump as your picture) from a 948cc 'A' Series engine and the sides had been ground back to enable the oil pump cover to be fitted.
The overall depth of the oil pump was not a problem in that case but the overall diameter was.
Previously I have had to dome the oil pump cover to get the cover to fit over the pump as some after market oil pumps are taller in the body than the original design. I have also removed a small amount off the raised centre of the oil pump body to increase the clearance. If you do dome the oil pump cover make sure that the domed oil pump cover does not foul the flywheel.
Make sure that the cut out in the oil pump body flange is at the bottom of the oil pump housing recess.
I know we should not have to do these things to get the oil pump and oil pump cover to fit but it does seem the norm these days.
I have posted some pictures below of the ground back oil pump.
