Has anyone been to the Le Mans Classic?

Post by Oldmogman »

Strange question for the MMOC board, I know, but has anyone attended the Le Mans Classic who could share their thoughts?

I thought it might be a bit like the Monaco Classic Grand Prix I went to a few years back but the Le Mans Classic is massive and hellishly expensive by comparison! Basic tickets cost 90 euros and those for grandstand seats 167 euros.

Are you able to see anything of the racing (and the start/finish line) without a grandstand ticket? Are there other good places to watch the racing? And, apart from the racing, is it an enjoyable experience - or is it like wading through ‘people soup’?!

(At Monaco, I could come and go as I pleased, go into the town for a coffee and even wander around the pits and talk to the mechanics.)

Or should I save my pennies for the Goodwood Revival?!

Accommodation will be nightmare.
We were holidaying through France a few years back (not in our Minor) and came across a nice looking hotel off the main routes. We asked about a room for the night. The landlady burst out laughing: "Do you not see all all the sports cars in our car park? It is the weekend of the Le Mans Classic".
"But Le Mans is 50km to the south of here" we remarked.
"You won't find a room between here and there".
I dread to think what prices they were commanding, given the preponderance of Porsches in the car park!
We had to phone our daughter in the UK to conduct internet searches to find us a place somewhere else in France.
She found us a hotel somewhere, but it was a 40km detour to the west.

In fairness, I think the same thing happens at Goodwood as well. Last year I priced accommodation for the revival weekend and the hotels were 2 or 3 times more expensive for that weekend than the ones either side of the event. Supply and demand I guess.

Definatly F.O.S went to the main Le Mans a few years ago,a bit disappionted ,my one lasting memory is of a little man at the end of the track underpass stood on his little dias waving his arms and blowing whistle and all the traffic totaly ignoring him.

To cut costs you can always camp at the circuit as I did way back for my 21st birthday. Camped right next to the track near the Dunlop bridge which is located just after the start. My lasting memory of Le Mans is wandering around the pits at 1:30 in the morning eating waffles. The whole event was electric.

Surely the MM owner goes to the Goodwood Revival and not the Festival of Speed?

Yes Ive been. 2016. Took my MGB down and booked with https://www.classic-car-tours.com/le-mans-classic.

You can either stay in a chateau or for the more budget conscious (like me) take your own tent & camp in the grounds. I can only speak for the team from 2016 but i cant praise them enough. The catering was superb and the people great.

Couldn't have been a better 4/5 days away.
