wiper problem then half the electrics cut out

Post by cyrus »

Just been out in the car, windscreen wipers suddenly stopped at the end of their travel and stuck there, indicators, fuel gauge and and heater blower also stopped working. Lights were still working. Stopped at the side of the road, all fuses and connections looked ok, wiper blades suddenly parked themselves. Carried on and when I reached my destination used the indicators briefly, they then failed and also the heater blower and the fuel gauge. Didn't dare test the wipers. Limped home slowly a bit later using hand signals (do people still understand that old signal for left turn? )
I wonder what the most likely cause of the problem is, has anyone had this before , can the wiper parking system cause multiple faults? Strange no fuses seem to be blown.

Check the fuse with a multimeter set to continuity. If in doubt change the fuse. If fuse is ok it is very likely to be dirty fuse contacts. Clean with fine emery cloth/paper and switch cleaner. The fact that the wipers parked themselves suggests it isn't the fuse.

It will most likely be tarnished fuse and fuse holder contacts and needs a clean as suggested by Stephen.
It is the one with White wires connected at one end and Green wires at the other, it protects everything on the ignition switched circuit apart from the coil and fuel pump.

If the wipers stopped and then suddenly parked themselves, it's almost certainly corroded/dirty contacts at the fuse holder.

Lighting will not be affected as Lights are un-fused, apart from the latter cars where the sidelights element of the lights are on the additional inline fuse.

All the circuits you've mentioned are on the fuse with the Green Wires coming from it.

Many thanks will double check the fuses and contacts in the light tomorrow. Not been so long since I cleaned them all up but the weather has been pretty filthy recently.

Yes the weather has been very foul and with the sudden warming of the weather my car was drenched in condensation in the garage. If the terminals are terminally corroded you can buy a new fuse box cheaply: https://www.morrisminorspares.com/elect ... s-p1238553

Our weather has been a bit damp.
What puzzles me about the 2 cars trapped in the flood water in our village is why the driver of the 2nd car (dark top heading L to R) thought they would fair any better than the driver of the first one (light top heading R to L) .... :-?

Taken this morning at 11:02. I think the cars only got caught around 07:00 to 08:00 ....

It was all damp but not as damp as the 2 cars in that picture.....the fuse box has been cleaned up and all working again, not badly corroded just got mucky again. The Lucar connectors on the wires themselves are the difficult bits to clean up . Thanks for the help folks

Glad you got it sorted.
It's usually fairly easy to locate problems on Minor Electrics, just by looking at what's not working and locating the common point on the wiring diagram.
There are still cars out there with 70 year old wiring, I'm lucky that my car was re-harnessed by a PO around 25 years ago. :tu1:

Great that it's all working. Well done!

Regarding the connectors, you can with care push the insulating cover back so that you can clean the metal. You must be careful not to pull off the crimped on connector so probably best only to do this if you have a crimping tool and some spare connectors!
