Another example of a word from motoring that we use is from the ignition timing: advance/retard. The word retard is highly offensive if used as an insult to those with learning disabilities but it is all about the context of how and when the word is used. The word itself is not inherently offensive.

I’m not sure what you mean, however Austin made some good cars, one that I particularly liked was the Allegro, although it wasn’t fashionable to say such. Safety in numbers I suppose. Opps I'm drifting the initial subject.

In my working life I prepared a specification for a building management system (BMS) for a university project in which we referred to " master and slave" controls. The University asked us to change the wording as the use of the word 'slave' in documentation on campus could offend some people.

Aircraft have micro-switches on the Landing Gear which provided a safety interlock to various systems to prevent mishaps. Any system that requires to know if the aircraft is on the ground.
When I joined the RAF in the 1970s, these were called Weight On Ground Switches.
By the 1990s, the official name had become Weight On Wheels Switches.

So language evolves, often for good reason, but these days people do seem to go out of their way to be offended and actively seek reasons to be so....

Animal Welfare group The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wrote to owners of 'The Sly Old Fox' on Hurst Street, Birmingham, saying the name was "derogatory".
In her letter, Ms Allen said foxes had “unearned reputations” as pests and this was partly due to derogatory descriptions of them.
“The word ‘sly’ often carries negative connotations like ‘deceitful’ – a wholly inaccurate and unfair perception of foxes,” she said.
She added that foxes were “magnificent animals” - resourceful, intelligent and had excellent memories - and even offered help the pub with any rebranding costs.

Well I’m all for animal welfare and more and although I see what they’re getting at, it has the tendency for people to dismiss it and possibly detract from the genuine work that these organisations do.
I’d be more inclined to pull people over such things as ——‘you wouldn’t treat an animal like that’ insinuating that if you did, it wouldn’t be so bad ! —— All these things just roll of the tongue without thinking, don’t they. I know these sayings aren’t necessarily a reflection on how people feel about things but let’s face it, if you make some glib comment regards the human animal, oh dear, you’d better watch out !!

Since her comment is that foxes are “magnificent animals”, I wonder if Ms Allen would consider that other creatures are not 'magnificent' and therefore they are less worthy of her attention in such matters....

For example, there are probably plenty of Pubs called the Hare & Hounds; should that not be getting more of her attention since Hare Coursing is illegal?

You've got to start somewhere, maybe the fox and hounds is next ——and I’m sure a similar description would be afforded them too. Lets make it clear MY view is this pub naming venture is a distraction, from more important issues, though understanding the idea, i think it takes more than the changing of a pub name to alter some peoples view on foxes etc.

Exactly. Proper campaigning on real issues, not going out of the way to find problems where there are none....

This one is wrong on so many counts.
Not only is the dog black, it is chained to a tree, where's the RSPCA when they're needed?

People born in Linlithgow are apparently known as “black bitches” – a name which derives from the fact that the burgh’s coat of arms features a black greyhound chained to a tree. The origins of that image, however, are murky: the most popular of several rival explanations is that the dog’s owner was punished for a crime by being exiled to an island in Linlithgow Loch, where the authorities intended that he should starve to death. His dog did its best to save him: the tried to swim across the loch to bring her master food, only to be chained up to stop her saving him. The dog’s loyalty and perseverance earned it this place in posterity.

New owners recently re-opened a closed pub locally but didn't keep the original name of
"The black boy" probably to avoid any such issues.
Were will it end, somebody somewhere will always be offended by something especially as we are now in the age of very thin skin and easily triggered people.
Glad I grew up in the 50's before all this BS.

My local branch of the MMOC meets at the Dog and Duck.

I rather like the Royal Navy tradition of changing the names of pubs to silly alternatives. Examples are: The Muddy Duck (The White Swan, Portsmouth); The Mad Monk (The Angry Friar, Gibraltar) and many others........

Dog and Duck might become the Mutt and Waddler or something like that....
