Bonnet release
Just putting the bonnet release rod back in does the tab that holds the spring on just jam at a angle onto the rod and were does the spring attach to on the body.

Spring attaches as shown in the photos Yes the tab catches the release rod at an angle and will not slip if tensioned correctly.
Incidentally, there is a rubber grommet under the bracket on the bulkhead. If that grommet has perished or is missing then the anti-rattle spring will not prevent the bonnet release rod from rattling horribly.
