Down under Minor

Post by JohnBu »

On behalf of my son, he bought his late 1957 split window (New Zealand) last year at the tender age of 15. Nothing to restore on the pristine, but not concourse Moggy. He recently got his L-Plates and has been learning to drive with excellent results. We've also done (although not needed) a full service,
trunnions greased,
gearbox oil replaced,
engine oil replaced,
new oil filter,
new plugs and the
pancake filter cleaned.
Next up is the diff oil change, the pinion seal needs is on its way if it needs renewing.
The brakes are good, with 8" (traveler/ute wheels at the back) and the regular 7" shoes in front. I can easily replace discs/pads, but shoes are an enigma to me (for the time being)

I'm pretty useless with electrical things, the trafficators are disconnected. The previous owner had the car for 35+ years and he said that they do work, although he disconnected them for some reason. How would I trace these out, multimeter bought.

What else do we need to be do regularly? We use Moreys upper cylinder lubricant with 95 octane.

Hi John and welcome,

That's quite a comprehensive list, as to the brakes comment, you either had a different set up on NZ cars, or you're mistaken.
Brakes both front & rear were 7", until they introduced the 1098 engine (early 60s) when they made the front ones 8".

So has the engine been changed?

As to trafficators...it's always a problem trying to resolve what past owners have done. Few provide diagrams for later reference.
It depends how Indicators were fitted.
If I were you, I'd follow the existing Indicator wiring. As you've explained it's a NZ 1957 Split Screen, it's obviously a late SII car which left the factory as a CKD in 1955/6, so similar my 1955.
Does it still have the Indicator Sw under the Dash by the Driver's knee, or a different one?
A past Owner moved the one on my car up to beside the Speedometer.
I can see it's a 4Dr, they had a temperamental Vacuum operated self cancelling switch...
If you have difficulties identifying, come back here with some photos. :tu1:
