9" Morris 1000 / Wolseley Drums ?
Hi to everyone, Hope your all keeping well.
I recently purchased (last August) a Green 1958 Morris 1000. It was bought in through a SA friend of mine living here in Ireland.
I might have bought it, but it is in reality my wife's car and she is loving it has a daily driver. We got it here at the end of march this year. It’s been a long-time dream of hers to own a Morris minor. I am inquiring about any info you guys might have of the cars drums brake. I was led to believe the drums were normally 7 or 8 inch drums. when I went to investigate the issue I realised the drums are 9" (228.5mm). The shoes are 2" 3/16 (55mm) in width and 7" cylinder to cylinder. the main thing for me is the cylinders but if anyone had info on what sizes would be best and where i might be able to purchase them. Would the cylinder be the same i the think the drum might be off a Wolseley if there a 9" Drum ?

Lucky you!! Sounds like you have Wolseley 1500 (or possibly Riley 1500 - I can't remember the width differences) fitted. They are an EXCELLENT conversion - I did that to my traveller and I've heard people say they're better than front discs (more 'feel' etc.). They have the additional benefit of catching the bottom trunnion if you don't grease them regularly so that you don't 'cock a doodle diddley a leg' as many minors did!
They're getting more difficult to find nowadays I think. I kept my standard brakes on the rear and the car handled really nicely - it was my only vehicle for several years and never once let me down.

Thanks Biggles, would you know if the cylinders are the same in the Wolseley 1500 & Riley 1500 and any issues butting on minor(948cc) this is all new to me just trying to get as much advise as possible can't afford to ordering bits if there not going to be right.

I believe you can use minor wheel cylinders but the holes in the back plate need filing out a bit. Don't quote me on this but I'm sure others will confirm or not.

If I remember they are slightly different internal diameters. They're definitely bigger than the standard moggie ones. I seem to remember if you modify the moggie ones by filing the mounting holes you need a but more pedal pressure - or something like that. I bet there's some info on here if you have a good search - I know the Riley shoes are wider than the Wolseley (hence a bit 'fiercer') and the Wolseley ones work really well. I've got some NOS cylinders somewhere but I'd have to hunt for them - they're a bit like hen's teeth and I remember paying quite a lot for them when I got them. Then instead of fitting them I re-sleeved mine with stainless steel sleeves...

Sounds like you have Riley brakes.
Just checked my Worsley 1500 shoes and the drums are clearly stamped

I had e minor cylinders fitted. If this is what you have I can advise on the mods required to fit minor brake cylinders. I recall the Riley ones are much larger with Girling cylinders and different threads for the brake hoses

Thanks guys for the wealth of information. I have to look into it closer this week and get the wheels off again I believe the drums were stamped

Additional info:-
The drums of the Wolseley 1500 rear brakes have the number ATA7154 cast into them.
They are the same drums as used on the Minor fitted with 8" front brakes.

Thanks everyone for your reply & advise sorry to bring this up again but I'm only getting back now. the front (9") drums were stamped with
ATA4099 along with MOWOG and also 10M. The shoes seem to be 9" X 2.25" (230 X 57mm) As i am still looking for these items an as advise &
help would appreciate it

I’ve also got Riley 1.5 brakes and have recently rebuilt the cylinders using new seals…for about £10!

Having had Riley 1.5 front brakes on my Minor before fitting the Marina disc brake conversion one of the problems I found was that the snail cam adjusted fitted into the backplate became loose and lost their effectiveness in holding the shoe in one position. The wear would allow the shoe to slacken/back off.
It is well worth checking that the adjuster is tight in the backplate.
I found that the adjusters had to be replaced on a regular basis.
NOS repair kits are can be found on 'e' bay if you find that the adjuster is slack in the backplate.
