stripped thread front axle

Post by Guildbass »

Well,

In the process of changing front N/S wheel bearings and after checking the Haynes book o 'lies, set the torque wrench to 65 lbs ft, and promptly stripped the threads on the stub axle.

So, anyone know where I can get another???

cheers...

Just in case of a real stripped stub axle thread the stub axle can be easily pressed out of the upright and another pressed in.
The hub castellated nut should be torqued to no more than 40 lb ft.
If you tried to tighten it to 65 lb ft no wonder the threads stripped.
If you got the 65 lb ft from the Haynes manual you need to ditch that manual and get a genuine BMC or BL workshop manual. The torque setting of the front hub nut is given in the General Data Section 10 of the BMC factory workshop manual.

Thanks Phil.

I do have a better workshop manual but in a maelstrom of recent tool tidying it's temporarily gone. The Haynes says 55 to 65 lbs ft but that did seem a bit excessive. I'll do the new one to 40.
I was a bit stymied getting the old races out and had to be shown that the front one comes out forwards and the rear one, rearwards and that there are two slots cut internally into the carrier wall to allow a drift to be offered up to each outer race to get them out!

Companies that deal with a broad range of classic British car parts, like Moss Europe, might have the parts you need or be able to direct you to someone who does. Or you can check some online stores like eBay, TBS-Bearings for good quality wheel bearings.
