Took bung out below stat housing but hole is shallow

Took the bung out to put temperature probe in fo a gauge but the hole at bung is only about 20 mm deep the probe is about 50 mm , seems this was to be simple , any idea what’s happening. Thanks.

When I fited mine the nut screwed in directly replacing the blanking plug, the hole past the thread is smaller diameter but the probe fitted through it.

Thanks don’t understand why the hold is so shallow. Was your probe very short. This is one I got. Not to good at photos still learning.

Thermistor transducers don’t need as much clearance as capillary bulbs.

Thank you but Thermistor transducers do they just run a bulb not a guage.

This looks same as mine a smiths type capillary guage.
Possible the hole has corrosion build up gently run a drill in the hole a size up on the bulb.

The hole will allow a 7/16" dia drill to easily pass through and the drill will enter the head by 2" plus.
There is more than enough clearance for whatever type of transmitter is fitted to the head.
Some transmitters require a adapter to enable the transmitter to fit the hole.
The hole in the head for the transmitter has a 5/8" x 18 TPI UNF thread with a machined face at its bottom.
The adapter and/or the transmitter is not required to fully enter the head. The transmitter is sealed by pressing up against the machined face at the bottom of the hole.
You appear to have the adapter and it looks to have a taper thread. If it is a taper thread it will not fully screw into the head and will give the impression that the hole is shallow. You have to fit the adapter independently of the transmitter and then fit the transmitter screwing it in until the transmitter seats against the machined face or if it has a taper thread until it is tight.
Below is a photo of my temp gauge transmitter installation. It has the adapter which is screwed into the head and then the transmitter (capillary) is screwed onto the adapter. The adapter and transmitter nut can be male or female dependent upon the gauge to be fitted.

Thanks and is it 100% safe to carefully run a 7 / 16 bit into
the head there , is that not part of the water channel ie would drill bits get into water system.

I believe it’s into the thermostat area. If you remove hosing and stat you maybe able to see back of hole and clean out any contaminants from drilling.

It is perfectly safe.
You need to get the transmitter into the water channel otherwise it would not work.
Use a 7/16" drill and turn by hand not with an electric drill.
As Bill suggests remove the thermostat cover and thermostat, make sure that the water channel is clear and you can then see what is going on.

Ok feel bit stupid it was grew up so flushed everything out
and got it running new clutch etc made good job , but just my luck the new heater control valve I fitted is leaking where the round control bar enters the valve. So
have to see if they will replace it now.
Temp was sitting at 180 -190.

On subject of heat is heater hoses hard to get off at the heater I can see one easy but is other just above it I have bad knees so had nothing suitable to hand to kneel on to look proper/. they need renewed.

Your gauge is Fahrenheit 190 so about 87 centigrade so perfectly ok

Heater hoses are straightforward. Depending on mobility and dexterity, to make access easier you can try:
Drop the parcel shelf by undoing bolts by door pillars - note spacers when refitting
Remove steering wheel
Remove driver's seat
Not usually necessary to do everything, but each bit helps.

One heater hose may be easier top reach if fresh air intake hose is removed first.

On refitting, hose from the tap goes through top hole in bulkhead to top of heater. Bottom hose is the return.

Thank you / lucky enough all seats are out , parcel shelf is out for a repair , all carpets out are out will try and leave steering wheel in. Bought silicone hoses the price were not too bad but 2 mtrs of hose posted to N.I at £9.89 for postage is a bit of a pain.
Easiest way to bleed heater isn’t to hold both hose up and fill with water then with as little loss as possible put hoses on.
