Gear box oil at Speedo advice on

Post by Mercmancdi »

Have oil on gearbox ( ribbed ) don’t know how long it took to gather but seems to be at the speedo where it enters gearbox , in centre of what looks like a large white nylon nut / bung is there a seal at this and what’s if any problems is there if I screw this out. ( ie any springs clips etc fall out ) is it a common place for a leak or anywhere else around there it seems to be coming from about that height ,ALSO with car sitting what’s excepted play when turning drive shaft by hand I am getting about 1”to 2” max of free turn back and forth. Was going to take drive shaft off to fit new universal joints I have for it although I can’t find much movement in the front anyhow
( not been at rear yet ) hoping it’s not the diff has play in it . Any advice in these matters would be great fully appreciated, any other seals you know of can be changed in gear box simply , the cross member bolts I have freed up no problem and in process of lifting engine out on its own everything disconnected,
Thank you. Hope post is in correct place if not can admin move please.

even if the prop uj's have gone you won't get more than a mm or 2 play, most of what you are seeing is in the axle, and an inch or so on the prop circumference is not excessive, if it's not making any strange noises I'd leave it as it is, worth taking the prop off and checking the joints though because they can seize.

For the gearbox, the only potential leak I can think of in that area is the spedo gears seal, the plastic housing loose in the gearbox or the gasket between the 2 halves of the gearbox, that is unless it's oil from further forward which has blown backwards.

Sounds like the Speedo drive pinion seal has gone.

Mine failed last year and you quickly loose gearbox oil as it's at the base of gearbox.

Thanks is the speedo seal hard to fit , do you screw out plastic section to fit. Advice please if possible
I am 90% sure oil is coming from the plastic plug the Speedo cable goes into centre of.
Thanks again

You have to drain the gear box and remove the plastic drive. The seal is on the plastic drive. I have found the seal can be quite difficult to remove but it's possible

SOLVED took old bush out easy enough with curved urchin pliers kept pressure on turning and gently pulling it came out fine, put new one in good tight fit pleased with that now. :::::Took drive out but bit lost in photo but bit lost now , bought new seal it’s all rubber. See photo ( I hope ).
In the drive I see a steel ring the small o ring in photo came out it looks bit tattered. Then the bigger ring is all rubber it photo , do I need to get the steel ring out and replace with the newer al rubber one I bought. And if it does does it go in with the smaller hole down towards gearbox and bigger hole on opposite side out where the Speedo enters , be grateful for advice please.
Now sorted and now gearbox cross member dropped to put new mounts in.
