Got my recon. short engine back last week from a local machine shop, it's looking good with new pistons, rebore, crank grind etc. and came in at a little over £1200 so the CMS offers might be competitive if you're capable of doing work of putting it together. Their feedback is holding up well so far. My local quote for a recon. unleaded head was in the same ball park costs-wise.

My 1098cc is now very high mileage. It has good compression when tested (170 psi) but it uses a lot of oil when used at speed so it is going to need to be rebuilt at some point. It may just a bit of work or a full rebore. My attitude towards old machinery is to do as little as possible, preserving as much originality for as long as possible. Whilst on Minors on Tour 2024 in Holland (and Germany) I asked around about reputable engine rebuilders. I was told to avoid MCCS because there had been "a lot of bad stories" and also that "they keep changing their name when they go bust". I did not talk to anybody who had first hand experience of the company so that is all I can say.

Problem is it’s hard to get some bits and pieces that’s original or buy some used parts /and if doing a lot of work it’s drastic to rebuild something then find the used part was not so good as first thought so some companies have you over a barrel. It’s ridiculous I m o what some places are charging for some very simple parts ie no won’t name the parts but you will know what I mean.

I've heard a few stories also, but some people have been very happy with them. Certainly they know their A series engines back to front and inside out
The main problem I have with these companies is that they're usually remote and difficult to go back to if things go wrong (when the offending machanicals are also back in your car). So I'd always go local if that option is available, if it's not, then these companies are definitely an option. And they do whole engines too which are expenive but come with a warranty? Not sure.

Yes, you have to tread carefully. The major engine builders get huge discounts because they use so many pistons, bearings, guides, seats, valves etc. I'm going to try and rebuild my backup engine which is a 948, I expect the pistons are going to be rather pricey. Mains and con rod bearings seem quite reasonable. Putting a recon unleaded head is £400+ now. I might look at second hand pistons if they were very, very good.
