HS2 spindle bushes DIY

Post by Michiel »

In a comment Phil mentioned that inserting throttle spindle bushes is a DIY job done with care. What kind of drill do I need and what are the points to watch out for. Your advice please.

You will need the SU bush fitting tool Burlen Pt No: ABF185.
The drill required is just a plain jobber drill size dependent upon the bush being fitted.
Burlen can supply the correct bush, the correct size drill and the bush fitting tool. They can supply a spindle and bush kit.
The main concern is getting the spindle holes in both sides of the carb body aligned and care must be taken to not drill right through the body.

When I stripped mine down I found that the bushes were okay but the spindle was worn.

There are no bushes for the spindle ex factory. If you find bushes - the carb has already been overhauled.
I have just serviced a HS2 SU carb and fitted a new spindle which was replaced not so much as for the wear but it came as part of the service kit and it would be a shame not to return the carb to its owner in non perfect condition.
Unless they have done a very high mileage and the carb has never been serviced/oiled the carb body rarely needs to be retro fitted with spindle bushes.

I have a slight play in the spindle. I understand it could be the spindle itself. But if not, I think drilling both holes inline is not easy..
