aha... the whine started again on Saturday. So on getting home I had a good look about - and it didn't take more than a bonnet pop to spot the squeak. It was the fan belt! No apparent damage but I replaced it anyway - and I've got the removed one for an emergency spare. And no annoying squeak - excellent...
What's next then...

If only I had time... and I wanted it anyway... mind you - the forty watt club would seem to be making a jolly good showing at the Bristol bike show in August. Looks like we'll have over a half a dozen assorted machines and collections of pig-iron and box-section steel. All we need now is a nurse and her blue MZ to confirm (considering she was the third member of the club - she ought to turn up really)... doncha fink?

Saturday 20th August daytime, free, central Bristol. If you don't like all the bikes you can just go shopping - proper bike show... with loads of brick-built beer tents and food vendors. Not a muddy field in sight - excellent!
