Don't know where to turn....
June 2022 spent over £2000 on tidying up bodywork on my 1960 minor. It was not an essential job but just wanted it looking the best it could ....there was no rust showing at the time whatsoever. Around Easter last year I did notice it looking a tad dull bit thought nothing of it. Well August last year 14 months later ....disaster. as you can see. I took it back to morris minor millennium in Manchester and they said it was down to the extremely hot weather we just had and also the fact my car isn't garaged (as this is my everyday car). If I knew the work was going to be so short lived and make the appearance drastically worse I wouldn't have bothered. I've taken it to body repairs specialists and they won't touch it. Any ideas of what you think? I am not an argumentative person and didn't put up much a fight.......

I remember you posting this last year.

I have attached my reply from then below,

I don’t know the company in question or their work and will not slag them off, but it does appear to be down to excessively thick paint application or poor preparation generally, although without having the car in front of me it’s impossible to say 100%

As I said before cars live in hot climates and live out doors, so no excuse there,

A general body shop won’t be interested in classics generally as they want modern easy fast turnaround work, you need a company that deals with classics, not a minor specialist, but one that deals with classics, they will have seen it all before and understand what’s happened,

Your only option now is strip the panel back to bare steel and start again, you can strip it with paint stripper yourself, (not nitromors) its rubbish, then your only paying a body shop to paint it, if you do strip it you will then need the rusted areas gently sand blasting to get rid of the rust or it will just keep coming back through, don’t rely on magic rust cure / converters, get it dealt with properly,

Some companies be they minor specialists or not do try to paint cars (customers love having a one stop shop for their vehicles) but in this case any decent body shop would have charged the garage you used a lot more than £2000, to paint it, most people “minor specialists or not” can manage to put paint on a car but don’t always have the understanding, care or inclination to do it properly,

You mention spending £2000, that’s not a lot of money for body work and paint, so it appears the company may have rushed it due to the limited budget or a lack of knowledge/care,

Don’t give up, find a good classic body shop and they will sort it all out, but it will cost.

My reply from 2023

Extreme weather? What about vehicles that live in Cyprus or Saudi Arabia the don't suffer like this, faded paint yes and peeling lacquer yes due to Extreme heat but not what you have,

It's easy to criticise another business from one's armchair but from what can be seen in the photo the small spots appear to be acid pop, (there's lots of different names for this) this is where either the paint was applied to thick and to fast and so builds up small pockets of gas under the paint or there was moisture in the airline which left small pockets of damp under the paint,

The cracked areas where there appears to be rust coming from underneath could again point to the paint being to thick and as its shrunkback over time it's cracked or just very poor preparation,

I would suggest talking to a good local bodyshop, perhaps one that deals with classics generally not just Minors and ask for their opinion, perhaps your garage had an issue with their air supply when they painted your car, or perhaps the painter was inexperienced, who knows... unfortunately your on a sticky wicket as they are free to blame things such as the paint on the car reacted with their paint, it's an old car, etc etc,

I will never spray over old paint on a classic as it's just asking for problems, unfortunately some companies want to carry out their work fast and cheap to maximise profits and some customers don't want to spend lots on paint work but that's where it can all go wrong
