Diff oil drain plug how to get a spanner that fits

Post by thorogood »

I am trying to change the oil in my diff ,1964 Minor 1000, and cannot find anything to fit the drain plug and level plug square hole. I have tried my 1/2 inch and 3/8 drives but it is between the two., any ideas where I can find the appropriate spanner.

The square female hole in the centre of the drain plug is tapered inwards towards the bottom of the hole so a 3/8" A/F or 1/2" A/F drive bar will not fit correctly.
A 3/8" A/F drive bar will do the job but will not be a tight fit because of the taper.
This is what you want - they have tapered lugs to fit the tapered female hole in the centre of the drain plug.

Don’t forget to remove the filler plug first.
