wheel nuts - '57 Traveller

Post by nutmegct »

The nuts on my four wheels are 18mm - not 17 mm (or 11/16"). 17mm socket, 11/16" socket, don't fit.

Does 18mm sound right?

I don't have the original Morris tire tool, but as most SAE four-size tire tools are 11/16", 3/4", 13/16", and 7/8", I wondered if I have non-standard wheel nuts.

Thanks.

The Morris Minor wheel nuts are not of a metric size.
They are 3/8" dia with a UNF thread. They have a 3/8" BSW/7/16" BSF head.
So use a BSW socket for the correct application.

Thanks Phil.

Are there many BSW fittings on the MM? I don't have BSW tools, so wondered if I should get a set.

And I just discovered that the engine crank handle has a wheel nut socket on the other end, which fits the nuts well.

Many of the fixings especially the suspension and body fixings on the Morris Minor are BSW/BSF. Therefore a good set of Whitworth/BSF spanners is essential.
The engine and transmission in the main use UNF fixings.
At the top of the mechanical section is a list of fixings with spanner sizes and torque settings.

I always try and buy good quality spanners preferably original Britool.
Here is a set of Britool spanners for sale on 'e' bay:-

Thank you sir!

I'd found this in Useful Tips, but it dates from 2004 -

As well as Whitworth spanners a good Whitworth tap and die set is a good investment.
Here is a reasonable quality Whitworth tap and die set currently at a very good price:-

Here is a reasonably priced BSW/BSF tap and die set.

If I was starting out again the tap and die set listed immediately above is the type I would be going after and of a good quality too made by a proper UK tap and die manufacturer.
Some of the older tap and die sets are of very good quality.
