Convertible with a tonneau - minor matters jan/feb 21

Post by cadetchris »

Just enjoying the most recent edition of minor matters and I’ve seen the convertible with a tonneau cover.

Does anyone know any more about these tonneau covers? I ask as I am going to make one for my roof off minor and having seen the picture of the tonneau, I nearly spat my tea out all over the place as this is exactly what I have spent a while researching but not really getting anywhere.

I've run a roof off Moggy Convertible since the summer and I was interested in the idea of a tonneau as well. Another covering I was thinking about fitting is a grille bib to restrict the air flow into the rad in cold weather. I remember they were a common sight on cars back in the 60s when I worked on the petrol pumps in Leith, Edinburgh, ( Broughton Road). They used to have lots of zips so you could gradually expose more and more airflow through the grille. Can you still get them? I live in Somerset now hence my handle! Wurzlejock.

I've not received my Minor Matters yet so haven't seen the article in question, but I do have a 1952 MM Convertible which I am going to restore and it has a tonneau cover!

It looks to be an original item (but I don't think it was a factory option) and is well made but has shrunk somewhat over time so doesn't quite fit everywhere. I am keeping it for now as a template for a new one.

I have seen one other Minor at a rally years ago which had one. I think that was a 1958ish blue and the owner told me his car was a prototype.

An owner in Oregon, USA has a tonneau on his 1960 convertible. It's been on since 1965 when his father installed in while in California. The attached photos are of a recent replacement that is a copy of the original. The only change is it now wraps down the back of the rear seat a bit rather than being secured to the top edge. It's strictly for sun protection and minimal security. BTW, the hood underneath is original.

I am in Australia and have a 1950 Low Light Tourer. The car already has holes that look as though they are there for a full tonneau.
Can anyone suggest a source for the tonneau itself, please?
Unlike the old one in the pictures, mine (having rear side screens) would not need the cut-out for the rear windows.
Thanks,
Frank

I’d be quite interested in seeing if there is a supplier, I’m very keen on getting one as it’s a bit my sewing capabilities
