Re: Ted the Traveller
Time for a small celebration. You've had a good day !!
Re: Ted the Traveller
Oh yes, the beer is in the fridge
Re: Ted the Traveller
Lots of little jobs carried out over the last couple of days, various bracketry painted and fitted
Also fitted new seals that go between the sliding glass, I thought this was going to be a pig of a job but in reality it took about 15 minutes to do both sides.
A smear of red rubber grease made pushing the chrome handle and seal back on easy.
I'll trim the seal back when I fit the new runners
Lower panel painted, bumper and lights fitted
It's surprising the difference new bulbs and clean lenses make, the lights are super bright. I also covered the bulb holder faces with aluminium glazing tape to act as a reflector.
Next will be the roof. I found the ends of the roof ribs had started de-laminating a bit so they are currently glued and clamped. The roof lining isn't brilliant, I'm going to try it in the washing machine tomorrow (no washing on a Friday) and see how it turns out.

Re: Ted the Traveller
That is looking good!
One small point: Those curved roof brackets we were talking about earlier which screw to the front of the timber frame look to be fitted to far forward. The need to move back an inch or two in line with the front of the top rail, because they should be bolted to the REAR of the roof crossmember not the front of it. So looking from the front of the roof joint, you have the front cab roof, then the rubber seal, then the front of the rear roof and the wooden crossmember and finally those brackets
It is hard to explain without a photo, which I do not have unfortunately.

Re: Ted the Traveller
Thank you that makes perfect sense. The roof to cab seal would have trouble sealing other wise.
Re: Ted the Traveller
The roof is on and nailed in position.
Bit by bit the jobs are getting knocked off the list
Gutter and roof painted
With the masking off
Made a start on the interior woodwork
After a good sanding and coat of Sikkens
I'll be fitting the rest of the window runners and glass next but it will have to wait for a couple of days as I need to get the Mini in there as well to make room for the tree surgeons who will need the drive for their wood chipper.

Re: Ted the Traveller
The rebuild continues
Interior is almost there. the carpets responded well to scrub with washing powder and a good jet washing
Seats are still looking a little squashed after being in storage but except for a few nicks and blemishes it all looks reasonable. Just need to fit the seat belts and if anyone knows where I've put the rear view mirror I would be very grateful
I'll need to do something with the headlining joint between the cab and rear roof, the lining seems to have shrunk in the wash and there's no way it will pull around the front spar so I think I'll form a strip of wood to fit across the joint and stain it to suit the rest of the woodwork.

The carpets before and after the 'treatment'
No that's not a pair of extra long jeans on the end
Most chuffed how they turned out

They came up well.
What's wrapped around your steering wheel?
Best wishes,
Mike.

Re: Ted the Traveller
Fair enough.
I did wonder if it was concealing the fact that the bakelite was separating (splitting) away from the steering wheels metal inner frame.
Not uncommon, as I'm sure you're aware.
They're (or something similar is) still available for anyone that wants one:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264689654367 ... Sw3gJZNCYY
This one wouldn't take much to repair but it seems a bit expensive for a cracked / damaged steering wheel to me....

Re: Ted the Traveller
I'd like to share a little mod I did. I wanted to fit high level brake lights and was about to make brackets to fit them behind the rear windows - then I had an idea.
Original reflectors
The LEDs I bought mounted in the original holders
All wired in
Not as orangey in real life and quite bright.

Re: Ted the Traveller
I bet you'll be glad to have it back on the road and to be able to drive it!
Best wishes,

Re: Ted the Traveller
Indeed I will, interested to see how he drives after all the work, he should be a bit stiffer (and lighter) body wise after all the new metal was added and the several layers of patches and rust removed
Re: Ted the Traveller
Ted is officially road legal
Insured and taxed, MOT exempt but I'll put him through after a shakedown run or two. Just need to do a final spanner check then he's freeeeeeee
Must remember to fit his wing mirrors

Re: Ted the Traveller
This is going to be one amazing car.
Re: Ted the Traveller
Its taken a little longer than I expected what with camping and the Moffat Rootes Rally then coming down with a lurgy (not Covid thank goodness) but he's finally out and enjoying himself - Ted as well as me
Blinking in the daylight
A few to shift before he emerges
And finally out in the sunshine
Needs a few tweaks but very happy overall
