Clearances too tight? Likely the car will be hard to start and will not idle happily. Also lack of power. The exhaust valves are also likely to get too hot and will become damaged over time.

Well that would explain why I was struggling to get past 50mph! & also the plugs sooting up all the time which I thought was down to a carburettor problem but may in fact have been tight valve clearances instead. Doh!!!!
I’ll get it out for a drive & see how she goes now the valve clearances have been sorted.

Hope the valve clearances does the trick, it might be worth testing the accuracy of your speedo too, in convoy with another car at 50, a 10% error is not uncommon on older cars.
the most unreliable part of a car is the nut holding the steering wheel!
