dust in drums causing juddering when stopping

Post by nutsandbolts »

My 62 two door developed a horrible juddering vibration when coming to a stop, I suspected the worst, dampers or worn bushes, but it was a simple fix. I checked the damper bolts, all tight, looked for loose fastenings and all seemed ok, so front wheels off drums off and found lots of brake dust in the drums, I cleaned around the shoes with a dry brush, emptied the drum dust in the bin and wiped with a clean cloth (mask worn even though they were newish linings)

While the wheels were off I re-greased the tie rod and king pins, re set the brake clickers when the drums were re-fitted and problem solved, no horrible judder/vibration when coming to a stop.

I could not believe brake dust could cause such a problem, I have had a few minors and never experienced this before, 'every day is a school day!'
