UFO [ unidentified fuel object ]

Post by andrewsxt »

On a newly aquired mog :D there is a metal cylinder approx 6 or 7" long and 1 or 2" in diameter connected via tubes between fuel pump and carb, previous owner said it was an unleaded conversion which i took with a pinch of salt being the worldly wise astute person that i am

Well it turns out that CW sell an inline fuel converter  could this be the very thing ? and if so what does it do ?

cheers

G'day Andy,

Congrats on the new mog. Hope you get heaps of enjoyment out if it.

The cylinder in question could well be a fuel catalyst. The makers claim they eliminate the need for an additive when using unleaded petrol in a vehicle without hardened exhaust valve seats (eg standard Minor).
They often make many other pretty amazing claims relating to fuel economy and power.

My understanding of these type of catalysts is that they are not effective at preventing valve seat recession, but otherwise have little or no beneficial effect. I stand to be corrected.

Vast and extensive volumes have been written and arguments had by bigger minds than mine on the whole unleaded/hardened seats/valve seat recession thing.

Let me state clearly that I'M NOT AN EXPERT on this matter, but have tried to read as much as possible on the issue as leaded petrol has been eliminated in Australia as well. Nothing I have read outside a manufacturer's literature provides clear evidence that these things work. Practical Classics magazine withdrew catalyst manufacturer's advertisments after independent tests failed to show the stated results.

I suggest using an additive (eg Valvemaster, Flashlube etc), or getting hardened valve seats fitted.

This is the website for one of the catalyst manufacturers:

Cheers!

I'd stick with your cynicism - as far as I remember, it does stuff all, except leave the buyer with less money in their wallet. I'd love to be proved wrong, but I don't think I will be... Is CW Charlie Ware's? I'm astonished that they would sell them.

cheers guys

thought it was too good to be true, suffice to say i am still using addative until head can be changed.
CW is indeed charlie wares but the only info on his site is "unleaded device 77 pound + vat" which i only assumed to be the same thing, i`m probably wrong.

a friend of mine got involved in some business selling magnets...

these magnets, when worn on the wrist, apparently cure/prevent all sorts of maladies....a bit like the old copper bracelet.

anyway....the company reconed that if you strap 1 of these "special" magnets to your petrol line/central heating supply or whatever, you could get amazing savings

being a TOTAL cynic I scoffed when he tried to sell me 1.

however...

he said he was soo confident in the product, that he would give me 1 for a couple of months, and if i didn't notice improved fuel consumption, i could give it back....no charge.

I agreed, and strapped said magnet (special curvy shaped) to my fuel line, just in front of carb.

thing is....I'd recently swapped engines, and had been taking very close interest in my petrol consumption for several months, each time I filled up I would note the mileage and litres etc....so i knew exactly what it was....33.5 mpg (1968 mini with 1300ish mg metro lump and a lead boot)

It was a complete waste of time...

after 2 months my mpg was exactly the same...and he'd forgotten all about it...afaik it's still on the fuel line (i'll have to ask my son who has it now)

I used a catalyst for four years - only cost £40, but it came with the car anyway. I couldn't check improved fuel consumption or performance because, as I say, Phyllis came with it. It lasted for four years with no adverse effects, until a lump broke off one of the valves... Probably wasn't doing much, then... It's still in the tank actually, but I've had a new cylinder head, which is the best way of solving the U/L problem. :)
Happy Minoring!

When I bought my Monor from C Ware, Mr Ware did suggest the catalyst instead of a replacement head.

I ended up using the Valvemaster additive until I needed a replacement engine (which is unleaded).

I've tried to find out mre, but as the others have written, the only information appears to be from the manufacturer - no independent testing confirms the claims.
