Offside front mysterious metallic noise!

Post by MollyOwner »

Hi guys and gals.
A mystery for you Minor sleuths! This is beating my former police detective skills!!

My 1967 convertible was acquired some years ago with Ford front disc conversion.
A slight bizarre knocking after 40/50 miles run was eventually traced last year to heating differences between the steel bearings within the provided alloy hubs as the culprit.
Cast hubs were fitted last October and all was fine.
Recently there is a mysterious metallic grating noise when on a right turn, as in going round a Roundabout . It is very similar in sound to a car with no brake pad material left and grating on the disc when brakes applied.
The pads have only covered 2000 miles. The calliper is firm and not touching the disc or binding. There is no visible metal dust anywhere. The tyres are not touching the bodywork, but as I say it’s a metallic noise. The hubs were correctly greased and no grease showing escaped. She steers and corners perfectly.
I’m baffled and intend to strip the front axle down tomorrow.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Stay safe and well
Charlie.

Mystery sorted. The new cast hubs were just slightly different in size, which allowed the calliper to move 1mm closer to the disc. That was just enough for the carrier and disc to make contact on a right turn. On dismantling thin score lines were visible. The carrier was removed and ground down. All is well!
