Sump welding

Post by RobThomas »

Changing a 948 from a cast iron (Vedette) sump to a tin one. The first tin one was rotten so I grabbed a spare but it looks to be a 1275 (bigger rear seal). Has anyone had luck welding a tin sump?

Tin sumps are no different to modern-day bodywork panels? Just need better cleaning up, maybe?

Welding depends on the kit used (gas, stick, mig, tig). Take your pick- all can be used but success depends on the level of ability, I would suggest. Most bodywork is still mig welded these days?

Rob
When I cut and joined two 948cc sumps together to give additional capacity, a baffle and windage tray it was an absolute nightmare.
No matter how good the welding it would leak at the weld seam. I used paraffin to find the holes and I used lots of it. Eventually I managed to stop the leaks. Looking back I would have been better brazing the join.
I would suggest that you find a good used sump or braze a patch over the leak.

Yup. 2. hours of chasing pinholes and blowing through. Finally got the back half changed with about 1/2 inch up the sides but leaving in the old sump plug boss. I'll change it as soon as I can find a decent one. :D
