Carpets how to fix them?

Post by sixdogs »

Any suggestions for sticking carpets down? I just bought a set of carpets from Bull Motif parts and a Bulkhead sound insulation kit (new superior type). There were no carpets fitted in the car when I bought it, as it had recently had a new floor fitted.

The problem is in fixing the bits which go on the wheel arches and innner sills. I intend to leave the main sections loose, so I can get at the master cylinder etc. I thought of "saves nails" or silicon rubber, even Latex. But none of these stick too well to dirty or greasy surfaces. Any ideas ? I don't like drilling holes in areas which just can't wait to start rusting away.

It would have cost the manufacturer virtualy bugger all to include a basic instruction leaflet with a simple diagram, so it's a bit of a poor do really.

Also, the "superior bulkhead soundproofing kit" I really haven't a clue how to fit this without taking everything off the bulkhead. And should I fit it with the "shiny side" to the bulkhead, or to the engine.

I would greatly appreciate any input from members who have been down this road and come up with a practical solution.

Regards, Clive.

I have used and do use aerosol heavy duty spray adhesive but if you do then make sure there's good ventilation!!!
Should be available from most good DIY outlets.

Best bet is to get the real deal from a trim suppliers, like my local one :- http://www.classiccar-trim.com/

"Adhesives
High Temperature Resistant Contact Adhesive

# 1 Litre.......................................£6.90
# 1/2 Litres....................................£3.90

Spraytack Adhesive

# 500 ml........................................£3.90
"

don't look too pricey for the quantities of the right stuff...

Thanks for the tips. Do you think I should remove the front seats and fit the carpets under the seat mountings, or cut round them ?

I decided to go for the high temperature contact adhesive from Classic Car Trim. At £7 a litre, it's no more expensive than buying stuff from a DIY. The carriage charge puts the price up a bit, but what's 15 quid to do the job right. It arrived this morning at 8am, having ordered it yesterday. Can't complain at that service.

I see the website also offers a comprehensive range of materials for car interiors, if fact eveverything you could need for restoring a car inside. Worth keeping in mind.

Thanks for the link john.

No probs!
Sounds like good service. He's just down the road from me in East Kent, and a lot of folk in the East Kent branch use "Classic car trim".

In fact I'm going there once the Traveller is MOT'd (only another week, I keep saying!!)
